Weekly fishing report ending February 23, 2023 – Captain Jeff Brandon

Cold and windy was the story for us up and thru Saturday. By Sunday, the wind was slowly changing from Easterly to South and we managed a couple of reds and a flounder, and a large bull that got off. On Monday the water was beginning to clear up from the storms and the early bite for us was a grind. The winds were light as the morning started and we had to break out the Marsh Land spray, as the mosquitos were brutal, to say the least. We found some trout feeding, but could only manage 1 small Spec before the sun peaked above the horizon. As the morning progressed and the water and air temperature began to rise, and the wind picked up out of the Southwest, we were able to land a keeper black drum on an artificial, as well as a beautiful keeper flounder that decided he didn’t like the boat and therefore lived to see another day. As we moved a number of times, we were able to find a few more keeper trout, with 2 solid fish over 19’ to finish up the morning, just in time for lunch.

What makes me smile is that Michelle started out the morning as a novice and by mid-morning, she was casting and coerced her first artificial lure catch in saltwater, and she said she is now hooked on this sport we love called Fishing. Fish we caught were in and around shell beds, and the bait that performed the best was Magic Grass on ¼ oz heads, fished very slowly.

As we get closer to Spring, fishing should continue to heat up, so hit me up in you want to get on the water before the crowds start rolling in.
